Sterling’s masterful command of the contradictory circumstances that frame this controversy brings instant credibility for me. He doesn’t pretend there’s a right and wrong side, a good or a bad set of actors. By giving such eloquent voice to the fundamentally dystopian narrative, he frees me from the Hero Or Traitor? nonsense that has animated so much of the discussion.

His exposition frees me to think about how bad this might already be.
