Rare footage of a “normal person” given LSD in 1950s clinical research
In this video, Sidney Cohen (author of The Beyond Within: The L.S.D. Story, administers LSD under clinical conditions to an unnamed “normal person” (her description), some time in the 1950s. Her description of her experience is really wonderful — you can tell she’s going through something profound and amazing. As Reason’s Jacob Sullum wrote in 2011,

It’s all internal in a way, but what I have come to realize is that everything that happens to you is part of a subconscious brain force that comes out of the music. I don’t sit there feeling like, Look, right now, I am quite melancholy or sad. Even if my music might feel that way to someone, I don’t sit around feeling like that. I don’t have a harrowing life story that caused my music to be a certain way. Like anyone’s life, things have happened but I don’t feel like it’s in my control. It just sort of happens, really. The Rumpus Interview With Jon Hopkins

“El Paso” Scene in Breaking Bad plus the rest of it.
When Stephen Colbert talked to Vince Gilligan about the song El Paso used in the season finale of Breaking Bad, he asked if Felina was Jesse or the blue meth, and Vince basically said Felina was the blue meth.. Viewed that way, the song El Paso matches up with not only the scene it was used in and the season finale, but the entire series. So I put the rest of it before and after the actual scene from the finale.
oh man, this is incredible.
Finally got around to watching this. Wow.

There’s only one movie poster at the Sandwich office and it hangs behind my desk (seen here)—a gorgeous Argentinean edition of my favorite ninja movie, 1983’s “Revenge of the Ninja”. Keep that in the back of your mind.
Today, NBC News is launching a brand new version of their Breaking News app, and they brought me in to make a video for it. Their whole thing is quality news you can trust, not a bunch of garbage. It’s based in a time-honored respect for journalism that reminded me of the old titans of news: Edward R. Murrow, David Brinkley, Walter Cronkite. So I pitched the client on the idea of having one of those salty old news guys present their app as the savior of news. And bless their hearts, they let me do it. So I enlisted my talented writing friend Joshua Allen to give the character a voice, and the next step was casting our news man.
Here’s the fun part.
Casting is never easy in these videos we make. Never. But every once in a while, a brilliant actor, a master of the craft who you recognize as having played the villain in your favorite ninja movie walks through the door to the audition and you try not to lose your shit, you try to pretend you don’t know who he is, but you know that voice, you know those wise, charmingly menacing eyes. This man is Arthur Roberts and he’s played a major part in your subconscious since the 3rd grade. He’s informed some important archetypes for you, as a storyteller. He’s Arthur Roberts.
So you cast him, of course. And he is simply a joy to work with. A gentleman and an artist and a pro in every sense of the word.
Breaking News. What a world.
This is probably the most fun I’ve ever had writing a script, and as a bonus I got to be on set while they shot it, like a real fancy gent!
When Adam was describing the character I was like “Oh OK so I should basically write it in my own voice.” And he said “Well I didn’t want to come right out and say it.”

Dad and Four-Year-Old Daughter Cover ‘Tonight You Belong to Me’
I watch and enjoy videos like this now that I’m a father.
When my mom asks me what I do, it’s difficult to explain. Frankly, it’s somewhat challenging to explain to anyone. Sometimes it’s easier to show. Back in July I traveled with a filmmaker to the Topspin Fulfillment warehouse in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. I love warehouse logistics, but I’m also a little weird. To me, getting to see a 650,000 square foot warehouse is akin to taking electronics apart as a kid. It’s exciting and you get to see things that no one else does. Aside from it being the biggest record store on the planet (guess what’s in aisle 33), there are robots, lasers and all kinds of other nerdy things to see. Part of my job is making sure that when artists use Topspin to handle their fulfillment and customer service, it’s done really well. Most artists will never get to see the warehouse, so Nick Tamburri (the filmmaker) and I made this for them. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Kevin Whitehead on Rudresh Mahanthappa’s new album Gamak:
On his new album Gamak, Mahanthappa takes off from Indian rhythms, but also the gamakas: the specific ways classical virtuosos tailor individual notes or move between them. They might attack a pitch from just above or below, or sweep upward as it trails off, or oscillate between notes. In these original tunes, as in traditional Indian music, those deviations are essential to the feeling and not mere decoration. Mahanthappa, who’s worked with Indian classical saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath, can get inside that authentic South Indian sound while turning it to his own ends.

Found on The Fox Is Black
This is the best skating video I’ve ever seen. Not because of the moves demonstrated (which are fantastic). Not because of the photography and production values (which are far better than average). It’s my favorite because I’ve never seen a skating video that was sad and defiantly hopeful all at once. This place where people once gathered to enjoy life is now abandoned and rotting in the desert sun. One skater takes it upon himself to bring the uplifting spirit of pleasant diversion to its rightful home, and he does so with greater skill than most people possess. He is the hero artist of the park. Skate park, water park, what’s the difference. The park is the park. Ultimately we know he will fail. The beauty and dedication of his choreography will not bring this place back to life. But it’s such an effort that we can believe for a moment that just maybe, maybe it will. With any luck that spark will apply to other things, non-park things, where it is needed. I want this to be a metaphor for something.
