Gotta give credit where credit is due. Microsoft Outlook for iOS and Android is really great. Using it as my only email app for the last couple of months and I love it. Glad I gave it a try.
I’m done trying todo list apps. Done. No more.
I keep reading doom-and-gloom articles about the collapse of nature. Leave it to Tyler Cowen to calm everyone down a bit. Marginal Revolution is one of my daily must-reads and Tyler’s podcast is a must-listen. Highly recommend both.
This is seriously the best chocolate I’ve ever had. Glad I bought a 4-pack!

Just finished recording the first episode of Departed at the PRX Podcast Garage In Boston. Incredible experience all around. So excited to share this with the world. Check out departed.fm to learn more about it.
I got another Outcome Unknown newsletter out. Can’t wait to see how many people unsubscribe after this one. I had a shitty Thursday. The newsletter is about parenting. You can sign up if that sounds interesting.
Over the last couple weeks of 2018 that I had away from work and, to some degree, parenting I determined to focus on scrolling less so I had more space (time) to create and do more. Nearly a month in, I’m giving myself a B grade. I started working on a podcast, the first episode for which I’m recording next week at PRX’s Podcast Garage in Boston while I’m there for work. I started a break from Instagram and deleted the app from my mobile devices shortly thereafter. When I do get the urge to share photos, I share to my microblog via Sunlit. I’ve been writing more often, though haven’t been reading as much as I would like (yet). I’m not taking as many photos as I would like (yet).
I also determined to pay for the things I want to exist in the world. A few things that I’ve happily paid for recently are Sam Harris’ wonderful meditation app called Waking Up, which you can get for half-price through January 31. His podcast is one of the best out there. I also subscribed to Peter Attia, who hosts one of my other favorite podcasts called The Peter Attia Drive. Speaking of podcasts, I subscribed to the absolutely amazing Podcast Notes and Buster Benson’s creative efforts, both through Patreon. Just yesterday I decided to support one of my favorite creators, Craig Mod, through his new Explorers Club.
Just ordered something on a web site with Apple Pay integration. That’s some magic!
Kashmir Hill is doing a really great series for Gizmodo called Goodbye Big Five. She spent six weeks blocking Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Apple from getting her money, data, and attention, using a custom-built VPN.
I had been using Apple Mail and Gmail for iOS for a long time. I consolidated on Outlook for iOS and have been pleasantly surprised at what a great product it is. SaneBox is running in the background, of course.
Our sweet Cassidy turned 6 today. She got to be boss of the family. She had chocolate ice cream for breakfast, sushi for dinner and Blue Star donuts for dessert with 7 candles - one for good luck because we all need all the luck we can get in life. I am so proud of the assertive young woman she is. She’s funny, kind and did I mention assertive? We celebrated her all day and all I could think, besides how much I love her, is where does the time go? I remember her coming into this world so vividly. It really does feel like last week. You are my sunshine. Happy birthday, Cassidy.
The first music magazine (really a fan zine) I fell in love with was Maximum Rocknroll. They announced the end of their print publication. End of an era, to say the least. Suprised it didn’t happen sooner.

This is a really thick book. Can’t wait to read every page. I did get the audiobook as well, so I’ll be listening to that next. There are so few artists that played such a significant role in my music exploration. Now that I really think about it, Beastie Boys have probably introduced me to more music and followed musical threads than anyone or any service ever has. Yeah, so they mean a lot, not just because of that, but because of what they stood (and stand) for.

🔗 A good resource for Google alternatives (not just search).
I continue to have mixed feeings about Google and their products. I pay for G Suite, mostly so I can use my own domain with their awesome web services and not have my data used for advertising. It’s also very secure.
When my wife is out and I’m tucking the kids in myself we always sing songs together. They’ve been asking to sing some new songs. Tonight we sang “The Wind” by Cat Stevens and “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel. They loved them both. ❤️😴

About to leave to go get an MRI on my shoulder. Last time, it did not go well so I’m super anxious about it. Hopefully it goes a lot better and I can finally start solving the problem instead of avoiding it. I really do not like medical procedures.

On my weekly commute to Santa Barbara, I take a slight detour off the freeway to drive through the farms. My absolute favorite is when the marine layer is low and the sun is barely up.
Got an iPhone XS Max today and I’m not sure I like it as much as my X in terms of size. Screen is gorgeous. With the only difference being the size, I might swap it out. I’m not enjoying it in my hand as much. 👎
🎵 There was a challenge posed to me today to assemble a playlist of only 20 songs that truly represent my musical point-of-view. This was really difficult, I want to keep adding and taking tracks away, but here’s where I landed. What about you?
Finally had my shoulder looked at. Nothing shows on the x-ray, but doctor suspects something will on the MRI. He thinks I have a torn labrum. 👎
🎵 Really looking forward to the new Tim Hecker album, ‘Konoyo’.
I can’t decide on the XS or XS Max. I had a 7 Plus, have been using an X for the last year, which I really liked, but I think I’ll like having more screen again. The fact that they are both the exact same excpet for screen size makes it difficult.

🔗 I wrote something up about leaving Evernote. Let me know what you think and if you have questions. Happy to answer them.
This week I finally was able to check a todo item off my list that I had been procrastinating for over a month. I migrated tens of thousands of mostly PDF documents out of Evernote and overhauled my personal information management system. If you’re curious how I used to do things, I wrote that up a few years back. I had so much stuff in Evernote and had been using it for well over a decade, but it was time to revisit how I was storing and using digital stuff. It’s worth mentioning, that I didn’t take many actual notes in Evernote and as time went on I couldn’t stand using it for that purpose. The app had really become bloated and I didn’t enjoy writing in it. The kicker, at least for me, was also that it didn’t natively support Markdown. The other thing I used it for was to archiving everything I posted and favorited online. This was all done through a service called IFTTT (If This Then That), about which I could (and probably should) write something up as well. Another time, but I’ll touch on what I did with all those notes a little further down.
If Evernote was the center of my digital life, my trusty Fujitsu ScanSnap was the key that enabled it. I just purchased a new one this year after the original one I bought back in 2010 stopped working. I cannot recommend it enough. I scan everything - mail, receipts, bills, warranties, documentation, but not photos. I use the scanner for the vast majority of it but also use Scanbot Pro on my iPhone or iPad. For what its worth, I use Scan Cafe to scan my physical photos.
One of the main reasons I started using Evernote to begin with was for its incredible optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities, which is no longer a unique feature. Today, if you want to search through indexed PDFs, Google Drive and macOS both have this feature, which in my experience works just as well, if not better. What OCR allows me to do is search the text inside a PDF document. For example, if I want to gather all of my doctor bills to review , I simply search for my doctor’s name (or some other unique identifier that appears on all of his bills) and in a matter of a second, they’re gathered and ready for review. I cannot overstate what a tremendous timesaver being completely paperless is. It takes up no space, is completely affordable and allows you to be a digital hoarder with no shame whatsoever.
Evernote can export notes in their native format (.enex) or in HTML. Thankfully many note-taking apps can easily import Evernote files. You can do it one-by-one by simply dragging a note from Evernote to a folder on your computer (I did this all on my MacBook Pro, not on my iPad) or select multiple notes and drag them together. You can also select a single or multiple notes and export just the file attachments. This was particularly helpful to me since, again, most of what I had in Evernote were PDFs. I already pay for G Suite so I settled on using Google Drive to store PDFs. G Suite is Google’s paid service (I pay $5/month) and differs form their free services you probably use. The great thing about G Suite, aside from being able to use my own domain, is the lack of advertising and data collection by Google. They have no plans to change this in the future, which is great. According to them, they do not collect, scan or use data in G Suite Core Services for advertising purposes. While I don’t feel awesome about Google from a privacy standpoint, but I’m willing to give a little to get the convenience and interoperability with devices and other services I use. Once I moved all of my documents to Google Drive, I created a single folder on my iCloud Drive and dropped them all in there for redundancy. I also plan to back them up on a physical drive.
As I exported the documents, I deleted them from Evernote, which left me with my notes and backups of my posts and favorites from social networks. In Evernote I had a few notebooks that were shared with Laura, so I needed to put the notes somewhere I could continue doing this, so I migrated those notes to Apple Notes. For all other notes, I migrated them to my current note-taking app of choice, Bear. In both cases, the notes were easily migrated by simply selecting them and dragging them to a folder on my desktop. Each app has an importing function that handles Evernote files.
As I mentioned earlier, I used a service called IFTTT with Evernote. The service allows you to easily create if-then statements that move digital things around from one service to another. It does a bunch of other cool stuff, but I used it to gather tweets I posted and favorited on Twitter, photos I posted on Instagram, posts on tumblr (I haven’t used it in a long time), favorite articles and highlights from Instapaper and Pinboard bookmarks. I decided to delete all of this stuff and not migrate it. I’m no longer active on Twitter and I moved all my tumblr posts to my Wordpress blog. Everything else, I can easily export whenever I want, which I do periodically and no longer feel the need to have it all contained in a single app or service. When I export stuff, I just throw it in a folder on Google Drive and back it up to a physical backup drive as well.
If you’re thinking about going paperless (you should!), get yourself a Fujitsu ScanSnap and keep your documents local on your Mac or put them on Google Drive where you can easily search them from any device. You could also store each document as a in individual note in Apple Notes, which I did consider, but the hassle of having to create a title for every note (I’m OCD like that and rarely took the time to do this in Evernote) and then attach the PDF to the note just felt like too much effort, especially considering the number of documents I was migrating. If I was starting over from scratch, I might consider it more seriously. Using Apple Notes for this purpose as well as taking notes has the added advantage of consolidating everything in one app. If only I weren’t so fussy and fickle with note-taking apps…
If you’ve been procrastinating migrating away from Evernote, I’m here to tell you it’s a pretty painless process. And in my case, since I was paying for Premium, it’ll save me $70 per year.
I migrated tens of thousands of notes from Evernote and deleted my account. Something I have been putting off for a while. The product is a mess and I got less and less value from it. Was a premium customer since 2008. 👋
🔗 I’ve been reading everything I can get my hands on about China’s surveillance apparatus. It’s terrifying and so interesting to me.
The wife just called TV On The Radio TV On The Radiohead. We both had a good laugh.
🔗 Really been enjoying the Stoner podcast. Whether you’re a stoner or just curious about weed culture, it’s a fun show. Been spending the last few days binge listening.
🔗 Empathy over ego. We can do better. Consider, even just for a moment, that you have absolutely no idea what a stranger is going through. This made me incredibly sad.
I never thought it would go viral, people making fun of me
Let that sink in. Reflect. Do better.
🔗 Shocker. New research shows that, post net neutrality, internet providers are slowing down your streaming. Thankfully nothing is being throttled through my ISP.
🔗 Should we stop listening to podcasts? Maybe some people should, but I don’t think it’s an easy, binary decision. Or maybe I’m in denial? I’m exhausted by people telling me what to do with my time.
Even though I’m pretty comfortable with the new Shortcuts app for iOS 12, I purchased the MacSparky Field Guide for it. I highly recommend all of David’s field guides. This is a great one though. Shortcuts is a gamechanger for iOS and is really accessible for all.
I was reminded of this amazing quote by Warren Ellis by @ayjay.
I’m an edge case. I want an untangled web. I want everything I do to copy back to a single place, so I have one searchable log for each day’s thoughts, images, notes and activities. This is apparently Weird and Hermetic if not Hermitic .I am building my monastery walls in preparation for the Collapse and the Dark Ages, damnit. Stop enabling networked lightbulbs and give me the tools to survive your zombie planet.
Not a day goes by that I don’t struggle with this. I think I’m as close as I will get for now, but I really need to get away from Evernote.
A few days later, I still cannot believe the names Apple has adopted for the new iPhones. It’s terrible and so unlike Apple. It’s unbelievable to me. Of course it doesn’t matter and no one will really care. It certainly won’t hurt sales.

My dad would have been 73 today if pancreatic cancer didn’t take him when he was 62. He was my best friend and a really great human being that helped so many people (he was a therpist) and always stood up for what he belived in. Here he is giving a talk about adversity while he was suffering with cancer. I love you, dad.
One of the main reasons I went with Feedbin (over Feedly, especially), was the committment to its customers. I was really happy to hear it doesn’t stop there. Feedbin is private by default. When an app says they value privacy, ask them to explain it.
Pretty big difference between Apple’s tracking (just my iPhone in my pocket) vs my Garmin fēnix 5 on my wrist. 🤷♂️
Yesterday my friend Chris and I tried to pack a bunch of things I’m in our final hours in Portland. This doesn’t include the 2.5 miles of biking that we did after visiting the Japanese Garden.
I like working on a large screen, but don’t like having so many apps open as one is inclined to do with a desktop setup. Wish I could just use my iPad, so I might switch over to that at some point today to really focus in on things I need to do.
No surprise that I’m finding it tough to get back into the swing of work after having spent the last several days away from technology, for the most part. I used my phone mostly for navigation and messaging while in Portland at XOXO. I decided against trying to document everything and ust tried to be as present as I could be.
Caught in the setup at the Portland Japanese Garden. So glad we made the effort on our last day in this amazing city.
Just got to Portland for XOXO. Gonna be an awesome several days. Very much looking forward to the Micro.blog meetup tomorrow.
Not bad. I can honestly say a lot of the Instagram usage has been research this week. Heading to Portland for XOXO tomorrow. I’m taking the good camera with me. Watch out. 📸
If you’re going to post photos on the internet, prioritize you’re own photo blog over Instagram or someone else’s space. Challenge yourself. Create something that’s truly yours. You’ll be seeing more photos from me here.
TFW you’re in a hurry to get your kid to school only to realize you went off without your work bag and then realize you’re almost at the office and forgot to go home to get it.

The hike club got together early in Saturday for a 2.5 mile hike in Temescal Canyon. Totally overcast the entire time, which was awesome.
I’ve had really bad back problems over the last week. Since I’ve been training over the last few years my back problems have been so much better. My trainer taped me up.
Just got the Sunlit update. Woohoo!
🎵 Some great Sunday music from Joseph Spence, who I read about recently in the New Yorker, in case you want to know more about him.
🔗 I haven’t seen anyone mention it on my feed, but figured some folks might think RSSHub is pretty cool.
If you think Twitter is bad, spend some time on Nextdoor. I’m ashamed I started our neighborhood and have completely quit trying to moderate.
🔗 So fascinating that there’s a cohort of Generation Z who are just not using social media. I love it and I’m not surprised.
I cannot, for the life of me, remember (or find in my mentions) a conversation about an app or service that allows someone to read Tweetstorms in an article format, but whoever you were that I talked to about this, the service I was thinking of is called Thread Reader.
I’m in deep browser tab debt. I need to just have a rule that when things get this out of control, I’m not allowed to create new tabs.
🔗 Guess Goodwill isn’t all good. I hate reading stuff like this, but I’m glad I did.
🎵 Some other great stuff I’m looking forward to spending some time with today…
🎵 New White Denim this week. So good to hear new music from these guys. Everything I hoped it would be. Such an underrated band.
There are two kinds of people in the world - those who continually try to improve themselves and those that don’t. On my best days, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and it inspires me to keep going. On my worst I feel like a total fraud and want to quit. Most days are good.
🔗 If you’re trying to get off social media, I present Brizzly. Type what you’d like to say in the box and it instantly disappears when you send it. It’s not saved or published anywhere! 🙄
🎵 Really enjoying Four Tet’s Live at Funkhaus Berlin, 10th May 2018 that just came out today.
Today is still Micro Monday on the west coast. There are some really great photographers on Micro.blog. @notdroppingcameras is one such person.
Cassidy’s first day of Kindergarten. There were lots of hugs and feelings, mostly from the parents. Can’t believe she’s a kindergartner. ❤️
🎵 New EP from Steven Rutter and John Shima called Step Into The Light
🔗 For all the parents out there, Wirecutter has some advice on when to switch car seats that’s probably worth reading. I know it was a point of confusion for us.
🔗 Sean Bonner has stopped using Twitter. I too am still left with a hole. Micro.blog doesn’t fill it. It’s not the same and I don’t need it to be. I’m struggling to find my people all in a place where I actually want to participate.
For the past few nights my sleep has not been good. I can tell you anecdotally and my Garmin proves it. Not sure what’s going on.
🔗 I can’t remember where I found this, but anyone testing Shortcuts on iOS should know about Sharecuts.
Lots of talk about revealing followers. I’ll throw my vote against it. We have all been conditioned to care about likes, follows, favorites, comments and other “engagement” by platforms that exist to drive enagagement for advertisers. I underatand that’s not what Micro.blog does or will do and I welcome the different approach. I participate in this community because I like it and the people. It’s a nice surprise when people respond. That’s good enough, at least for me.
Took me 44 years, but I finally got a document apostilled. Stoked to check THAT off my bucket list. 😜
Ozzie’s first day back at school, only this time without his big sister Cassidy, who will be starting Kindergarten on Monday. She’s been so sweet and supportive of him. Guess I’m doing something right!
🔗 Cool read on Sonos' Chief Product Officer in WIRED this morning. Working at Sonos has been the highlight of my career so far.
On the days I drive to Santa Barbara for work, I get to the office between 7 and 7:30 which is so great. I feel so much more productive. Wish I could start the day that early every day, but alas I am a parent of young kids.
It’s Micro Monday and I’m using this one to shine a light on @grayareas for the photos, art, history and other inspiration found around the net. Keep it up!
I don’t work from the Hollywood spot often, but I sure to love the views. Does it look 100 degrees? It definitely feels 100 degrees.
🔗 Bring the Artful Noise: Looking Back 30 Years at Public Enemy
“It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” is in my top albums of all time for sure.
Does anyone cross post to Mastodon? Why / why not?
🔗 Great interview with Brian Eno. Fun fact - I fall asleep to 🎵 Ambient 1: Music for Airports every night and so do my kids.
I’m done. Not deleting my account, but not participating anymore.
🎵 Qualm by Helena Hauff is blowing my mind right now.
If anyone knows of friends looking for a new gig in the Boston area, I’m hiring a couple of people to join my team at Sonos. Direct links to job descriptions on Sonos.com - Looking for a Dev Manager as well as a Sr. Software Engineeer.
I love and hate Twitter. I can’t quit. I’ve unfollowed nearly everyone and it still really gets to me sometimes. I love micro.blog though.
One of the coolest music videos I’ve ever seen. Great song too! Tulipa Ruiz - TU
I really want to get a gaming console again. Last one I had was 10 years ago (PS3). Considering a Nintendo Switch vs. PS4 or X Box. Wife will not be happy. Children will.
I watched Ready Player One last night. The book is one of my favorites. I had no expectations and hadn’t read any reviews. I thought the movie was meh. Not sure it was worth the time.
🔗 Tsundoku is the art of buying books and never reading them, but what do you call it when you add articles to your Instapaper feed and never read them??
Ozzie was pretty stoked to see his sister graduate as well. I know he’s going to miss being with her every day though. Only two more years before you’re back in the same school.
Cassidy graduates preschool today. I can’t believe how fast time goes when you become a parent. I’m so proud of the person my daughter has become. Kindergarten, here we come!
I can’t use Things 3. Just can’t. It’s nice, but not for me. Going back to Todoist. At least I cleaned up my todo list. 🤷♂️
I got my first web cam since my Connectix QuickCam in 1995.
There is good in the world.
🔗 In the last week I’ve run across (and read) two articles connected by the topic of microfilm. One was entirely about microfilm and the other was about a guy in NY archiving newspapers.
🔗 Here Comes The Sunscreen (via Kottke). Added to my laundry list of things I do not enjoy about being a parent.

🎵 My insanely talented friend, Alessandro Cortini, released a new SONOIO album today. Gonna be spending some quality time with it today. Listen on Apple Music, Spotify or wherever you listen to music.
Thanks to @craigmcclellan’s Tools of Choice I spent the evening migrating from Todoist to Things. It might not have been the best idea and before I drop the $50 💸 on the macOS app, I’m going to live with it for at least a week.
📖 I recently finished John Perry Barlow’s wild ride of a book Mother American Night: My Life in Crazy Times. I did the audio book on my weekly back-and-forth between LA and Santa Barbara. Thoroughly enjoyable, as I expected it to be.
🔗 The latest Recode Decode with Matt Mullenweg was great. Recommended listen.
I’ve talked to a few people here and elsewhere abot how I use Evernote. I even wrote something about it a while ago. One of the main use cases that has kept me using it is its amazing OCR and search for scanned documents. I’ve been testing the native macOS functionality as well as Google Drive’s. Both are acceptable alternatives now, which means I have some thinking to do…
🔗 Man, the trailer for Mid90s gave me all the feels. Wow. I don’t get excited about films or TV shows, but I’ll be going to see this.
🔗 Annoyed by Restaurant Playlists, a Master Musician Made His Own - The New York Times. Kind of the multimate ‘get off my lawn’ move.
🔗 It’s disingenuous for Google to call it “Confidential Mode” when it’s not actually confidential.
Jason Lee is a good skater and actor, but he’s an exceptional photographer. I had been following him on Instagram. He recently decided to leave and double down on his own site. I really liked his recent post about it all.
I really enjoy The Outline a lot. Their design is so great too. They really stand out in the pool of online publications.

I’m seeing more and more people using “micro” as a thing. Sunset Micro Journal is the latest I’ve come across. There’s nothing better than Day One IMO.
Hand Foot and Mouth Disease, pinworms and lice are all parenting rights of passage. I’m now 2 for 3 after 5.5 years with two kids.
Also, quick update on my quest to move my Google Photos from Gmail to G Suite is still in process. Just downloaded file 19 of 28, each of which are 10 GB each. So time consuming, but I really just want everything consolidated in my G Suite account.
I had been considering staying with Feed Wrangler for my RSS needs since Google Reader went away, but so many people were saying how much they loved Feedbin, I figured I would try again. I subscribed today. The killer feature for me is email newsletters. Wow. Take my money!
Kottke took a roadtrip and boy did he take some nice photos. Having the time, space and resources to do such a thing feels impossible, but I know it’s not. It’s on my list. I want to see so much of the west that I haven’t seen. Most of all, I so enjoy the solitary time.
🔗 Instapaper is going independent. Fingers crossed.
🔗 What’s happening? Who cares. Meet JOMO, FOMO’s benevolent younger cousin.
🎵 Just got turned on to Patrick Ewing’s Warm Focus playlist by Nathan Edwards. So good!
You know what I do on a Friday night for fun? I go through literally hundreds of open browser tabs reading stuff and adding stuff to Instapaper and Pinboard.
Is this the beginning of the end for Instagram? I do not use Facebook, but I do use Instagram and love it. That said, if the two products begin to converge, I’m out.
Curious about what @agiletortoise uses in place of Drafts on macOS, because IT’S KILLING ME NOT HAVING IT ON MACOS 😀
I’m also trying to consolidate services as much as I possibly can. For example, I pay for extra storage on Gmail and also subscribe to G Suite. It took a very long time, but finally got my nearly 160K emails in Gmail migrated to G Suite. Next is photos.
Feels like I mess around so much with trying to get my online life dialed in just right. Tonight I decided I didn’t like microblog posts intermingled with the longer stuff, so I got a proper micro.blog account and mapped a subdomain. 🎉
I can’t even make it through these testimonials of the cruelty of Trump’s deportation.
Angelica Rebeca Gonzalez-Garcia (Guatemala) Backstory: The 31-year-old mother fled domestic abuse with her then seven-year-old daughter.Testimony: “On May 10, 2018, the day after our arrest, Officers came into the room and told me that they intended to take my daughter away from me… Most devastating of all, the Officers said I would never see my daughter again. When the Officers told me this, I felt like collapsing and dying. I cannot express the pain and fear I felt at that point. My daughter was only seven years old and she was much too young to be taken from me.
“When I asked why, the Officers said that I had ‘endangered’ her by bringing her here… During this same conversation one of the officers asked me ‘In Guatemala do they celebrate mother’s day?’ When I answered yes he said, ‘Then Happy Mother’s Day,’ because the next Sunday was Mother’s day. I lowered my head so that my daughter would not see the tears forming in my eyes. That particular act of cruelty astonished me then as it does now. I could not understand why they hated me so much, or wanted to hurt me so much.”
Again, as a parent… as a HUMAN, I am grief-stricken. How can we be treating people with this level of cruelty?! I feel so helpless. I feel sick.
We made it to Denver with about 5 minutes to spare before bairding started. Not how I like to role, but we made it. Now at home in LA. Quite a journey. We took two cars, a bus, a tram, a plane and one more car. Record heat in LA. 🔥 😴
Not really surprised that people gave access to apps that allow Gmail messages to be ‘read by human third parties’. It’s rather misleading to blame Google and I’m far from a Google apologist. Audit the apps that have access to your Gmail and consider using ProtonMail.
Not sure we’re gonna get out of Colorado tomorrow, at least not out of the airport we intended. The Lake Christine Fire has Aspen Airport closed down, at least through tonight. Not scheduled to leave until tomorrow evening, but it’s not looking good.
We might not make it out of Colorado due to the Lake Christine Fire. We’re not due to leave until tomorrow night, but no planes are getting in or out of Aspen today.
Welp, I’m back on Dreamhost. I’ve spent weeks trying to get this site set up on Wordpress.com and it has been the biggest pain in the ass. If everything is set up correctly, this should also post to Micro.blog.
Wow! Fluid has been updated to support WebKit2. Looking forward to having this back in my life.
Richard Swift dead at 41. Such a loss for the world. Music will live on. I know he was such a good friend to many. 😞💔
AI Nationalism by Ian Hogarth came recommended by Yancey.
At a restaurant in Colorado. Two white guys having dinner next to us. One says, “you seen Black Panther?” Other guys says, “Hell no! Do you realize if there was a movie called White Panther, everyone would say it was racist. I’m so tired of the double standard everywhere in our country.” Took everything I had not to call the guy out. If I wasn’t with the family, I probably would have.
Made it to Colorado. So nice to get away.
I guess the thing I’m struggling with is that I use Drafts to write posts, share to Micro.blog app and the post seems to post, but never shows up. Not sure what’s wrong. So then I have to use the WordPress app.
I really wanted to post once on Wordpress and syndicate to micro.blog, but can I also do the reverse - post to micro.blog and syndicate to Wordpress? I just want it to be easier. Maybe I’m doing it wrong?
Having such a frustrating time with Wordpress.com. Been working for weeks now trying to get my self-hosted site transferred over. So much is broken. And the friction of posting through Wordpress to micro.blog is too much. Too many steps.
I’m a soda water snob. This is THE BEST soda water I’ve ever had. I never knew water could be this carbonated.
I just contributed on @theactionnet: LEAF Project for Universal Representation for Unaccompanied Children. Contribute here: actionnetwork.org/fundraisi…
I can’t handle this. It’s just too much. How is this even allowed to happen in our country. It’s unbearable, and I’m just READING about it. Those kids. KIDS!
I largely avoid news. I read long-form analysis mostly. Reading about the barbaric separation of immigrant families, specifically taking kids away from their parents and putting them in what amounts to jails is abhorrent. I feel powerless and heartbroken. There are some things you can do though.
Amazon, Microsoft, and Uber are paying big money to kill a California privacy initiative.
Actions speak louder than words. Also, I noticed one big tech company absent from the list.
44 ain’t so bad.
I think the move to wordpress.com is complete. Just one more thing to confirm. This needs to post on micro.blog. I’ll erase it after it does.
Well, I’m now using iOS 12 on my X. Everyone seems to really happy with the stability. We shall see…
Hi, my name is Brad and I’m addicted to browser tabs. I have no idea how many I have open right now. Maybe hundreds. Who says web discovery is dead?
Suicide is on the rise in America. When I was young a neighborhood boy that we all knew hung himself. My dad sprinted to their house and tried to revive him. Two of my best childhood friends took their own life in their 20s and a close cousin killed himself by setting himself on fire. Depression and mental illness are all around us and many of us have loved ones that are struggling. It’s important we learn how to properly care for them and for ourselves as we do so.
Don’t worry, the future is going to be just fine.
A really great skateboarding physics lesson starring Rodney Mullen. Also just subscribed to the YouTube channel.
One of my favorite bands of all time.
What an aboslute joke. I think this warrants a little more than some “quick thoughts”. Amazon is facilitating the assmbly of a surveillance state. Period. There was no public oversight.
Here’s what the EFF had to say.
I don’t use AWS Lambda to delete my tweets, but I do have a utilty set up that does the same thing. I really enjoyed how Vicky explained her approach and reasoning, which matches closely why I decided to do the same thing.
What a beautiful eulogy for Doug Engelbart, arguably one of the most important people in the history of technology.
My only wish for WWDC is that by some miracle Siri becomes usable.
So happy to know that there is a corner, somewhere, that is coming out of a dark age. There may be hope for us yet!
One of the things I’m still struggling with related to using Micro.blog is that I can’t post as fast. This has been a barrier to me contributing more, but maybe that’s a good thing?
It is so easy to pile on to the news of the day and provide your own knee-jerk response. I do it in my head and that’s where it stays. This shift, especially now that I’m so much more focused on writing and contirbuting positively to the Micro.blog community, has had a positive impact in my life. Feels good.
I still cannot for the life of me figure out why people share their Venmo transactions publicly.
Our mobile location data is no longer private and I can’t help but feel like this genie is never going back in. It also begs the question of whether it matters how much Apple makes privacy important.
Can’t stop listening to the new Pusha-T.
Kinda makes you wonder about all those Alexa devices, eh? Amazon isn’t doing itself any favors. I’m getting rid of mine and I won’t be the only one.
Amazon Teams Up With Law Enforcement to Deploy Dangerous New Facial Recognition Technology
I wrote about my more conscious approach to using technology, which of course included some bits about this amazing community. Let me know your thoughts, even if it’s just about my comma usage. Thank you all for being so welcoming.
I don’t even understand this.
Om’s thoughts on Google Photos vs Apple Photos are pretty spot-on. While I’m in Apple’s ecosystem and appreciate their focus on privacy, I love Google Photos. I think it’s their best product and I’m ok with the trade-offs because of how great it is.
I’ve been wanting to get my kids' names tattooed on me for a while. After having a bad experience with an artist, I decided to use 99designs.com for one of them and the results are incredible. Can’t wait to show it off, once it’s tattooed on me.
I usually get to Santa Barbara around 7:30am. I walk out the back door of the office to get breakfast. Every time I pass this mirror, I look into it. Sometimes I take a photo.
Stop the madness by Michael Tsai. Love this. I don’t use Safari as my main browser, but if I did…
In celebration of Questlove’s new book, there’s a cool Creative Beats application on Glitch.
This is really terrible for those of us that care about privacy. It’s difficult to get people to switch messaging apps. I imagine a lot of government officials are happy.
WhatsApp founder plans to leave after broad clashes with parent Facebook - The Washington Post
I listened to Kottke on Craig Mod’s excellent podcast, On Margins this morning as I drive to Santa Barbara. Great episode!
These wallpapers by The Verge are really nice. As much as I read The Verge, I don’t think I ever realized they did this. Cool of them to release the art.
I really hope to see other cities across the country take the same stance. This is real progress.

Incredible! I’m such a sucker for stuff like this.
Such a huge bummer. Digg Was Just Bought By An Ad-Tech Company Called BuySellAds. Outside of RSS, what are the sites you all visit on a daily basis?
I think SmugMug buying Flickr is a good thing. Feels like a great place for them to land. I haven’t posted anything to Flickr in a long long time, but my account remains.
Prince’s original studio version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ playing over unseen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution from the summer of 1984. Wow.
You thought Cambridge Analytica was scary. Bloomberg just published a long read on Palantir.
Perhaps the single, most essential app on iOS has been updated. Drop what you’re doing and get the new version of Drafts then go read the MacStories review.
Is it only a matter of time before Kottke is on Micro.blog? According to him, blogging is most certainly not dead. I concur.
Downloaded and have been playing around with Maslo a little. Interesting and kinda fun.
Watching Jordan Peele use AI to make Barack Obama deliver a PSA about fake news is pretty fucked up.
Mohamed Bzeek is a hero.
Frank Chimero has a nice, OCD write-up on how he manages music. I’ve been using Spotify more than Apple Music lately and this is exactly the kind of thing I needed to run across today.

I have an email newsletter called One Great Read. Can you guess what it is? I’m about to send out the latest email, so now it a good time to sign up.
I’m a massive fan of the music and culture of Ghostly. They have an awesome new site. Really loving the design. They even have a blog post with the team that did the redesign that was super interesting. I particularly love the catalog numbers and archive feel of everything.
Looks like Samsung is the first big phone manufacturer to make a phone that intentionally does not have Internet connectivity.
The Light Phone 2 looks 100x better.
An awesome album for a Sunday and one of my favorites of 2018. Daniel Avery’s Song for Alpha.
A good read I ran across from Om’s great email newsletter. While everyone is partying and enjoying some great performances, Latinos in the area are living in fear.
🎵 Really enjoying this new DJ Koze. Feels like summer. His Amygdala album is a masterpiece.
I’ve been tweeting since 2006. I’m user 926. A while back I unfollowed almost everyone, set my tweets to expire after 14 days and mostly post links at this point. I’m not going to delete my Twitter account, but I am going to begin posting elsewhere - my own blog.
